David Hartman has experience working as a cartographer, but his claim to fame is helping the state of Minnesota map out its charter school law in 2009.

At head of the state’s charter school center, Hartman implemented systems to approve and oversee authorizers in response to the law, which put the state in charge of the authorizing process.

Since coming to SchoolWorks, Hartman has focused on charter school reviews and site renewal visits for the School District of Philadelphia and the National Heritage Academy, among others. He has also overseen SchoolWorks’ efforts to assist Chicago Public Schools in overhauling its charter application and renewal processes.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work on many things in the forefront of the evolution of charter school oversight,” Hartman says. “There’s a lot of room for growth, so our touch at this specific time is pretty significant.”

Hartman credits the broad range of experience at SchoolWorks as creating an environment conducive to professional growth. “SchoolWorks has lots of very smart people, who all come with various nuances of experience,” he says. “On a weekly basis, if not more often, I am challenged to learn more and stretch myself to improve my own set of skills.”
